A Scotch Irish immigrant to America. Tradition is source of most of information about Hezekiah. Said to have been a foremost woodsman and frontiersman. Thought to have migrated from Scotland to Ireland, probably in the vincinity of Ulster, Ireland. A Scotch Ireshman, and a victim of political and religious persecution, Hezekiah left Ireland for the free shores of America in 1732. Not known by what ship or where he landed. For a time he settled in Pennsylvania and then moved into the headwaters of the beautiful and charming Shendandoah Valley of Virginia. Hezekiah left the Shenandoah valley, for reasons unknown. Maybe the area was becoming too populated or stable for his pioneer spirit. Many were migrating down the valley and westward. He moved to the wilderness area of Walkers Creek in southwestern Virginia. Date of migration is uncertain, though one writer has stated the move was before 1760. Some believe Hezekiah Sellards father was Peter John Sellards, Jr., the son of the Irish Political refuge, Peter John Sellards, who came to America around 1700. |
