Excerpts from the book: "Appalachia Crossroads" (Chapter 3 - Jane Wiley
Williamson)**

"Jane 'Jenny' Wiley, daughter of Thomas and Jean (Sellards) Wiley, and
granddaughter of Hezekiah Sellards, was born ca 1791 at Walkers Creek,
Virginia, married in Floyd County, Kentucky, October 10, 1810 to Richard
Williamson, born ca 1786, in the Clinch River Valley of Virginia, the youngest
son of Alden Sr. and Isabel (Thompson) Williamson.

In some records Jane is spelled Jain, but I believe this to be phonetic
spelling of the name.

Floyd County, Kentucky records contain two documents on the marriage of this
couple. First, their marriage bond. The following excerpt shows the type of
bond required at this period of time, the parties to the bond or the groom and
his bondsman who was usually a relative or a very good friend of the couple,
and the date of the application of the marriage.

Known by all these men presents that we, Richard Williamson
and Shadrack Ward of Floyd County are held and firmly bound
unto the commonwealth of Kentucky in the penal sum of fifty
pounds for the payment whereof we bind ourselves, our heirs
and firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated
this 9th day of October, 1810.

The other document is the permission slip or consent slip by Jane's father,
Thomas Wiley. Permission slips were common when either of the parents, and
often the parties to the marriage, were unable to make the journey to the
courthouse.

To mr. Mayhoe, clerk sur, I wold request the favor of you that
you wold grant lisense of marriage as all parties are satisfied
to the same covenant of merrege between Richard Williamson and
Jane Wiley, Given under my hand Thomas Wiley. Attest: Hezekiah
Wiley and Shadrack Ward.

As Thomas Wiley died in 1810 he may have been too ill to make the trip to the
courthouse. You will note the similarity of this permission slip with the one
he wrote for his nephew Michael Borders, as recorded in Chapter 8.

Tradition is that Richard Williamson's mother died shortly after his birth and
that he and his brother, Hammond, were raised by his maternal grandmother.

Richard Williamson sold in 1830, per Floyd County records, fifty acres on
Levisa River, below Road Branch. In 1834 he bought 25 acres on Tom's Creek.
Thus it appears Richard and Jane lived in Kentucky about 24 years before moving
to Wayne County, Virginia (now Wayne Co, West Virginia). Probably most of
their children were born in Kentucky.
