(This portion was taken from "FAMILY HISTORY OF MICHAEL PHILLIPS: 1795 TO 1800") "The year 1795 should hold for us memories dear to the heart of all, for on January 22, 1795, at Ashtenbauch, Germany, Michael Phillips, to whose memory this little booklet is dedicated, was born. Alsaice (sic) Lorraine, a city always renowned but today held in the greatest of esteem because of the recent world war, was the birthplace of Ave Rosena Sheperda, whose advent was January 1, 1800. Glorious childhood days of these two pilgrims were spent in their native country. Cherishing hope, with love and devotion, they were united in marriage, the exact date of which can not be learned. Five children, Michael Jr., John, Stephen, Helen, and Joseph, were born of this union, in the country close to the hearts of their parents. The year 1837 marks the coming of this family to America, at which time they located in Peru, Peru Township, Huron County, Oh. After remaining here three years they moved to Norwich Township, locating on the farm now owned by Joseph Claus. Three children, Aloysius, Mary Ann, and Rosena, were born in America The autumn of 1877 brought deep sorrow to this family, for on September 1, 1877, the loving Father was called to his reward, at the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 9 days, at the home of his son Joseph Phillips, Norwich Township. The remains of this loved one rests in St. Sebastian's Cemetary, Bismark, Oh. Bleak, cold February brought death to the affectionate Mother, who on February 25th, 1888, at the home of her son Aloysius, entered the realms of eternal happiness, at the age of 88 years, 1 month, and 24 days. Her remains rest in St. Mary's Cemetery, Reedtown, Seneca County, Oh. A Short History of Each Child: Michael Jr., was the eldest son, born at Stundweiler, Germany, December 29th, 1823; came to America with his parents in 1837. He was married to Elizabeth Swartzenberger. Six children were born to this union, George, Stephen, Frank, Michael, Rosa, and Mary. Elizabeth Swartzenberger Phillips died at Blakeslee, Williams County, Oh. Michael Jr. then married Mary Clinger. Two children were born, who are now living at Blakeslee, Oh. Michael Jr. died at Blakeslee, Oh. Mary Clinger Phillips is still living. John, the second son, was born at Stundweiler, Germany, March 4th, 1825, coming to America with his parents in 1837. He was married to Catherine Gross, who was born January 2, 1829. Ten children were born to this union - John Jr., Louis, Joseph, Martin, Mary, Jacob, Fannie, Anna, Helen, and Matilda. On July 1st, 1902, John died at the age of 77 years, 3 months, and 27 days. He was laid to rest at St. Stephen's Cemetery. Catherine Gross Phillips died in 1910 at the age of 81 years and was laid to rest in St. Stephen's Cemetary, Seneca County, Oh. Stephen, the third son, was born at Stundweiler, Germany, December 26th, 1827, coming with his parents to America in 1837. Elizabeth Korb was his wife, to which union was born one child, Stephen Jr. On September 26th, 1855, at the age of 27 years, 9 months, Stephen died and his remains rest in St. Sebastian's Cemetery, Bismark, Oh. [note: this Stephen Phillips Sr. was Marianne Phillips Williamson's great-great-Grandfather....Stephen Phillips Jr. was born February 19th, 1856. This only child was not yet born when his father died. One of Stephen Phillips Jr.'s children was Edward Joseph Phillips who was the father of Clyde Anthony Phillips] Helen, the fourth child, was born at Stundweiler, Germany, 1829. She came with her parents to America in her eighth year. She was married to John Bowers. To this union two children, Rosa and Mary, were born. John Bowers died on December 8th, 1857, at the age of 32 years. Helen Phillips Bowers later married Peter Shelb. To this union three children, Peter, Helen, and Rosa, were born. Joseph, the fifth child, was born at Alsaice Lorraine, March 19th, 1835, coming with his parents to America when two years old. He was married to Catherine Swartz, to which union eight children were born. These children are all living - John, Frank, Edward, Mary, Helen, Rosa, Kate, and Michael. Joseph died at the age of 80 years and rests in St. Sebastian's Cemetery. His death occurred January 30th, 1915. Catherine Swartz Phillips is now living with her daughter, Rosa Phillips Bauman, in Sherman Township, at the age of 78 years. Aloysius, the sixth child, was born at Peru Township, Huron County, Oh, October 8th, 1837, and was married to Veronica Havert. Three children, Anthony, Mary, and Theresa, were born. Veronica Havert Phillips now lives with her daughter Theresa in Reed Township, Seneca County, Oh. She is now 78 years of age. Aloysius died at the age of 81 years on October 14th, 1918, and was laid to rest in Reed Township. Mary Ann, the seventh child, was born at Norwich Township, August 30th, 1840. She was married to Peter Kluding, to which union eight children were born. Peter, Frank, Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, Michael, Rose and Catherine. On April 12th, 1867, Mary Ann died at the age of 27 years. She is laid to rest in St. Sebastian's Cemetery, Bismark, Oh. Her husband was born August 7, 1831, died May 5th, 1908, at the age of 76 years, 8 months, and 29 days. Tosena, the eight (sic) and youngest child, was born at Norwich Township, 1843 and was married to Michael Phillips. Rosena died in 1863 at the age of 20. She rests in St. Sebastian's Cemetery, Bismark, Oh."
